What is the XP Gymnastics Nationals?
The XP Gymnastics Nationals (often referred to as "Nationals") is an annual event that brings together athletes from across the country to compete in all the gymnastics disciplines including artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline and aerobics.
It’s the highest level of national competition for many gymnasts and a major goal for competitive athletes each season. The event is organised by Gymnastics New Zealand, the national governing body for the sport.
Nationals usually takes place in Term 3 or 4, and the location changes each year, rotating among cities in New Zealand- in recent years its taken place in Invercargill, Tauranga and Palmerston North. Gymnastics NZ announces the venue and dates well in advance to allow teams time to prepare.
This year it will be taking place in Auckland at Trusts Arena 23-27th September, 2025.
Who is part of the Auckland Team?
The Auckland Team is made up of 3 clubs- Tri Star, Waitakere and Eastern Suburbs!
Who Attends Nationals?
Nationals is not an open-entry event. To attend, athletes must meet specific qualification criteria to represent their region. Selection is based firstly on attaining qualification scores (set by the technical committees of each code), then on an athlete’s ranking in the Auckland region. This is calculated taking into account the best scores of the athletes over a number of predetermined events. If an athlete doesn’t make a team, there is the chance they could still attend as an individual but only if there are available spaces.
For Trampoline, generally there are no restrictions on the number of athletes that attend nationals due to lower membership numbers. If they have reached the performance criteria (which is documented in the technical handbooks), they can attend.
In WAG there is one team of 4 per step. Teams are selected by taking into account the top 3 all around scores of all athletes in each step from throughout the qualifying season with one score needing to come from an out of region event. Some consideration is also given to overall team strength so if for example an athlete with 3 strong events adds more value than the 4th ranked AA athlete, they may be selected instead. If other regions don’t fill their team quota, then GNZ may make available additional spots for individuals to attend nationals
MAG is similar to tramp in that if an athlete obtains the qualification score, they can attend. There are some instances however where high numbers in a Level may mean only 1 team of 4 can be selected. This year this is the case with MAG Level 4. If other regions don’t fill their team quota, then GNZ may make available additional spots for individuals to attend nationals
